Community Outreach

Rotary Buddies – Karen Majors
Rotary Buddies are members who volunteer their time to meet with an assigned child in a specified elementary classroom one time monthly.  During that interactive period, the volunteers may read with their ‘buddy’, play a game, or just visit.  Their objective is to take a genuine interest in the child’s life and achievements and provide encouragement as an adult community role model.  The project always welcomes additional members interested in being a  short term “buddy” to a local child.

Shoes That Fit
As the result of a magazine article indicating the success of this project in another part of the country, Shoes That Fit project was adopted by Peru Rotary Club.  The project chair receives requests through counselors and principals in North Miami, Maconaquah and Peru schools for shoes for children in need.  Appropriate shoes (and socks) are purchased for the child and delivered to the referral source for distribution.  As funds are needed, the project is supported by proceeds from the annual Peru Rotary Golf Outing held the last Tuesday of June.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing
Each year during the Christmas season, Peru Rotarians spend one day ringing the bell for the Peru Salvation Army.  Members generally work two-hour shifts as a team encouraging fellow citizens to donate to this worthy cause.  Peru Rotary Club’s members have raised the most money of any group ringing the bells four out of the last five Christmas seasons.  Watch for the sign up sheet in early December.

Adopt A Highway – Mike Walters
Several times each year volunteer Rotarians don their orange vests and clean up a stretch of State Highway 19, South of Peru.  Their efforts result in beautification of the approach into our city and some jovial camaraderie.  If you are the outdoors type, plan to donate an hour or so to support this environmental effort.

Rotary Scholarship – Steve Hull
The Rotary Scholarship of $3,000 is presented annually to a graduating senior from one of the county high schools.  Applications are distributed through the guidance counselors’ offices of the respective schools each spring.  Selection of the winner is conducted by a committee of Rotarians who carefully review completed applications.  The recipient accepts the award and provides an overview of their plans for the future as a program at a regular weekly meeting in late spring.

Non-Traditional Scholarship – Jeff Price/Melody Edwards
Our most recently created scholarship is offered in conjunction with Peru Tri Kappa philanthropic sorority to a non-traditional student from Peru.  The student may apply the $1,500 scholarship grant to needs that affect their ability to reach their academic goal such as transportation costs, child care etc.  Availability of applications is announced through the media and area schools.  Selection of the winner is conducted by a combined committee of Rotary and Tri Kappa members

RYLA – Dan Banina, Chairperson
Each year, regional young people take part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) at Camp Tecumseh.  Incoming high school juniors and seniors chosen for their leadership potential attend an all-expenses-paid weekend to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice.  RYLA aims to:

  • Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth;
  • Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders;
  • Encourage leadership of youth by youth; and
  • Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.

Applications for participation are available in mid February annually through the county high schools and the committee chair.

Relay-for-Life
For the past several years, the Peru Rotary Club has sponsored a team of members, spouses and friends in Miami County’s Relay-for-Life.  Our involvement is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society.  During the event, teams of people gather at Peru High School track and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times. Through pledges and item sales members have raised money and provided moral support for those participating in the relay each June.

Annual Cole Porter Classic Run – Jim Yates/Mike Kuepper – Co-Race Directors
Each fall the Peru Rotary Club hosts the Annual Cole Porter Classic run. The scenic 5k and 15k run/walk skirts the Wabash River in Miami County. Volunteer Rotarians man the course to assure safety by providing traffic control, water stops and first aid support. This long running event attacks runners and walkers from all over the state of Indiana. Funds raised from the event have supported a variety of projects, but primarily the local Nichol Plate Trail.  ---------------For More Info and Entry Form Click Here--------------------------------------------------------
The 2007 running of the Cole Porter Classic is scheduled to kick off at 9AM on Saturday, September 29th at the Peru Circus Building.
